Baking for a Hobby... here we are now!

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Hey!!!

Welcome to my new blog all about baking and everything foodie lifestyle! Im Jess and I have been baking since I can remember, I'm now in my early twenties - so its been a while I suppose. My New Years resolution was to start a blog on my website - we are now in February and I'm only just starting - but Ive started and that's what counts.

So, grab a cuppa tea and your favourite slice of cake - settle down and lets begin from the start...

I remember being 10 or 11 ADDICTED to a well known TV show 'Cake Boss' with Buddy and his family set in Brooklyn, New York. Everyday...Cake boss would be on TV and I would be giving my mum daily updates on Buddy and his growing families life and what dramas was going on in the bakery - almost as if I knew them and I was actually there. Sad, I know! For those who don't know who Buddy is and what his show is about - have you been living under a rock? Joking... Long story short - Buddy is a Baker in Brooklyn, New York. He owns Carlos bakery and they have a TV show - Buddy's father taught Buddy how to bake and now he makes SUPER CAKES! Life-size cakes of formula one cars and aquariums with actual live fish and lights in the cakes - 7 foot long and 5 foot high. Things you would never think possible, buddy and his team make possible. This is where I got the hook for cakes. I even went to New York to find 'Carlos bakery' had my photo taken outside and was amazed at the queue lining up out the door and round the corner of the street. This is where I got the bug.

I started baking cakes from a young age and trying new things out - experimenting... my mum and dad must of thought 'what on earth is that?" when I would present my 'chocolate strawberry flower cake'. As I got older I started to learn what was acceptable to give someone to eat and what wasn't so appetising to look at - no matter how creative I thought it was in my mind at the time. I grew up in the kitchen rather than the playground with my mum and two nan's. Life has most certainly flown by -

taking us round to Lockdown 2020 - a horrible time but the most precious time to be locked away indoors in the comfort of my kitchen with nothing but the Internet to learn and do courses, my kitchen and baking equipment.

I started baking cakes and brownies for my family and neighbours for their birthdays or to cheer them up from lockdown blues. Obviously, covid friendly and socially distanced. Then all of a sudden breaking out the other side of lockdown I was taking on neighbours aunties, cousins, friends of friends, before you know it I had a business.

My passion for baking only has got stronger and bigger to the point my whole home is baking mad with boxes everywhere waiting to be unpacked from Amazon and Etsy, Sweet Stamp and Cake Decorating - much to my parents disapproval. Sorry mum. I am totally consumed with learning new techniques and finding new equipment. Pushing every skill set I have!

I have made so many friends through my love of baking, where we share the same interests and passions, I've also made so many wonderful new friends through my clients - I am so grateful for each and every order and LOVE every new theme and specification on every bake I get to create! I don't think the buzz for that will ever go.

If you are thinking of baking? Starting your own new hobby in baking or even have a dabble at creating your own - GIVE IT A GO! What is there to lose? My Inbox is always open to give a helping hand where to start and the basics - that may actually be my next blog post - 'all about the basics'... Even if you need help with cake courses and anything down to the right food colouring brands to use I'm not here to gate keep and would love to help. Oh! Also, if you have any ideas for blog post ideas please do drop me a message or on my contact page on the site - would love to know what you want to see next...

I think I have rambled on enough here for one post!

Happy Baking!

All my love

Jess xx
